1986

KONDA Research and Consultancy Ltd. was founded.

1987

KONDA conducted its first election research for the 1987 General Elections. The final one of six studies carried out between July and November projected that ANAP would receive 44.6 percent, SHP 18 percent, and DYP 12.4 percent of the vote, resulting in a three-party parliament. In the actual election, ANAP received 36.3, SHP 24.8, and DYP 19.1 percent.

1988

Ahead of the constitutional referendum held on September 25, 1988, regarding the proposal to bring local elections forward by one year, KONDA conducted a series of studies for Milliyet newspaper. The final study, published on September 24, projected that, after distributing the 2.5 percent undecided voters, the result would be 34.97 percent Yes and 65.03 percent No. The referendum resulted in 35 percent Yes and 65 percent No, and Milliyet announced the outcome under the headline “Milliyet hits the mark.”

1989

Ahead of the March 26 local elections, KONDA projected, based on research conducted in three major cities, that the mayoral races would be won by SHP.

1991

Ahead of the General Elections held on October 20, 1991, KONDA projected that DYP would take over government from ANAP. However, due to a misreading of the differences in vote shares, KONDA did not foresee that ANAP, rather than SHP, would emerge as the second-largest party. A study conducted on October 15–17 indicated vote shares of 27.4 percent for DYP, 22.1 percent for ANAP, and 24.8 percent for SHP. The actual results were 27percent for DYP, 24 percent for ANAP, and 20.75 percent for SHP.

1994

Ahead of the March 27, 1994 local elections, the main competition for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality mayoralty appeared to be between İlhan Kesici (ANAP) and Zülfü Livaneli (SHP). KONDA’s survey, conducted for Kanal D and published in Milliyet on March 26, projected 24.9 percent for ANAP, 24.7 percent for SHP, and 23.1 percent for RP. Despite this, the news was headlined “Refah may emerge from this picture.” In the election, the Welfare Party received 25.19 percent of the vote in Istanbul, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected mayor.

1999

Ahead of the 1999 General Elections, KONDA’s published survey indicated the rise of MHP and the possibility that CHP would fall below the electoral threshold. Some audiences found this outcome unconvincing. The election results were 22.2 percent for DSP, 18 percent for MHP, 15.4 percent for FP, and 13.2 percent for ANAP, leading to the formation of a DSP/MHP/ANAP coalition government.

2002

Beginning two months before the November 3 elections, KONDA conducted four studies. These studies projected that the incumbent coalition parties would fall below the threshold, that the Ak Parti would come to power, and that, aside from CHP, only Cem Uzan’s Genç Parti would surpass the threshold. The election results confirmed this outlook, leaving coalition parties outside parliament. The Genç Party, which had declined from around 15 percent to 9 percent in the final study, continued to fall and ultimately received 7 percent of the vote.

2006

KONDA conducted the “Who Are We? Social Structure Study” through face-to-face interviews with 48,000 individuals across Turkey. The study produced significant data on the country’s ethnic and religious composition as well as the Kurdish issue. Since Turkey’s ethnic composition had not been publicly reported since the 1965 census, the study’s estimate of a 14 million Kurdish population generated considerable public attention.

2007

Ahead of the July 22, 2007 General Elections, KONDA faced strong backlash when its survey projecting 47.9 percent support for the Ak Parti was reflected in the media. KONDA and Tarhan Erdem were subjected to harsh criticism by several columnists. While some members of the press argued the survey could be flawed, others accused KONDA of influencing voters in favor of the ruling party. The election result—46.7 percent for the Ak Parti—closely aligned with KONDA’s projection. The results also confirmed KONDA’s prediction that DYP would fall below the electoral threshold.

2007

KONDA published the “Religion, Secularism and the Headscarf in Everyday Life” study in September 2007 as a continuation of its 2003 research. The study tracked changes in headscarf usage over five years and documented religious practices and the role of religion in everyday life.
